Hulu to Charge for Streaming Content

October 23, 2009

Alec Baldwin Hulu

I guess nothing can stay free forever. It looks like ad revenue is not enough, because a Broadcasting and Cable article reports that will start charging for their online entertainment.

“I think a free model is a very difficult way to capture the value of our content,” said News Corp. Deputy Chairman Chase Carey. He went on to say, “It’s time to start getting paid for broadcast content online.” News Corp. suggests that a subscription plan could be running by 2010, but they have no specific timeline yet.

I have a hard time believing that very many people will pay for a Hulu subscription, even if it means no commercials or better selection.

Coming Attraction: The Crazies

the crazies

In The Crazies, a small town is plagued by murderous insanity due to a toxic chemical exposure. This premise has my inner teenage boy jumping for joy.

I’ve never seen the original 1973 George Romero version, but now I think I’ll rent it. I’ve enjoyed most of Romero’s other work, including Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead.

On the one hand, the trailer is pretty creepy and well-made. On the other hand, this is a horror remake, and almost all horror remakes are lame. Since I’m in a good mood, I’ll give The Crazies a 3 on the Potential Meter, but it should probably be more like a 2.5.

Coming Attraction: The Expendables

the expendables

This is promo footage, which means it’s a rough edit of footage from the film. And boy, is it ever rough.

The Expendables boasts a cast of many action stars, including Sylvester Stallone, Jason Stathom, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, and even has small parts for Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis. With that cast, how can you go wrong?

Unfortunately, the footage doesn’t look very promising. The action is nowhere near eye-popping, and the one-liners are horrendous.

Bald Bad Guy: “Who sent you?”

Sly Stallone: “Your hairdresser!”

Funny stuff, I know. The rough promo trailer looks bad, and the comic one-liners are cringe inducing, but since there are so many big time action stars in The Expendables, it has a chance to be fun and/or interesting. I’ll give it a high-ish “two” on the Potential Meter.

Movie News: “The Spy Next Door” Gets a Poster

October 19, 2009

I’m sorry, but this is the most pathetic photoshop job I’ve ever seen. Terrible, terrible stuff. And it looks like Jackie Chan is holding a light saber.

In The Spy Next Door, Jackie Chan is a babysitting for his neighbors when one of the kids accidentally downloads a secret government file. I hate it when that happens!

This stuff feels so familiar (Secret Agent Cody Banks and Spy Kids, anyone?). With a terrible supporting cast that includes George Lopez and Billy Ray Cyrus, I’m going to have to give this a “one” on the potential meter.
